Sadegh Tabatabai had sought permission through Imam's son Seyyed Mostafa Khomeini. Imam agreed the photos to be taken if it were too natural and free of any artificialities or formalities.
The photos were taken at a historic time when Imam was living in exile in the holy city of Najaf.
The images show simple life-style of Imam at a time when he was leading the Islamic Revolution from exile and had millions of followers.

Late Seyed Sadegh Tabatabai , who passed away in 2015, has been brother in law of late Hajjat al-Islam Seyyed Ahmad Khomeini and nephew of Imam Musa Sadr.
He has rendered great services and severed on various positions in the Islamic-Republic.
Late Tabatabai has left a lot of memoirs about the great Imam and events leading to emergence of the Islamic Revolution
Imam established a comprehensive Islamic-democratic system following the victory of Islamic Revolution in 1979. The progressive Islamic government brought prosperity and development for the nation in coming years.
Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic through his historic speeches and messages frequently said that Islam was fully capable of establishing progressive democratic system.
